Outcomes

Regulatory reform is at the heart of the new Department's work, and its inclusion in our title underlines our commitment to this essential agenda. We are the key player in an ambitious regulatory reform programme, having taken forward recommendations from independent reports by Philip Hampton and David Arculus.

Examples of BERR’s work to reduce burdens include ;

  • Nearly 900,000 companies have been exempted from audit requirements on the accounts, saving companies at £94 million a year
  • Issuing new employment regulations only twice a year
  • Issuing ‘Plain English’ regulatory updates on award-winning Businesslink.gov.uk, which helps business save time and money
  • Cost-benefit analyses are now produced for all new BERR proposals impacting on Business, published on the Internet and submitted to Parliament
  • Consulting with business on all major proposals for a period of at least 12 weeks
  • Jointly worked with Defra in lobbying which helped reduce projected costs of EU chemicals legislation (REACH) by £6 billion
