The Future of the Wool Textile Industry Export Promotion Levy

Starting Date: 03-08-07

Closing Date: 26-10-07

This consultation concerns the future of the Wool Textile Industry Export Promotion Levy (“the Levy”). It is a statutory levy that is paid by all wool suppliers and processors subject to certain thresholds. The proceeds are used to support the export marketing efforts of the wool textile industry through the National Wool Textile Export Corporation (NWTEC). NWTEC activities have been pivotal to the success of the wool industry in export markets worldwide.

However, as a result of some representations by industry and the determination by the Department to promote better regulation and reduce bureaucracy by removing outdated and unnecessary legislation, we are reviewing the future of the Levy. Ministers are minded to close the Levy but wish to seek the views of all interested parties before making a final decision.

We are therefore consulting all the companies that pay the levy, key representative bodies as well as users of NWTEC services. We are asking if the Levy should be ended - and if so whether this should be as soon as is practicable, or over a longer period of time to allow NWTEC and the industry to adapt; or whether it should be retained. We are consulting throughout the UK.
