In the past the Department (then DTI) ran safety awareness campaigns and collected research and statistics on safety issues, causes and consequences. This work has now ceased, but some of the resources are still available on our Safety Research page.
Some of the safety awareness work is now carried out by organisations such as the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT), Help the Aged and others.
The Department for Communities and Local Government has overall responsibility for Fire Safety. Their Fire Kills! website contains a wealth of information and advice. They are also responsible for fire safety building regulations and the new rules on electrical work in the home. Our Firework Safety website offers information on firework legislation.
The Department of Health is active in the area of accident prevention and medicine safety. The NHS supported on-line Home Healthcare Guide has first aid advice. Also, the 999 Ambulance Service telephone operators are trained in giving first aid advice over the telephone including advice on choking.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has the lead in government in the area of medicines and medical products safety.
