Engineering & Flow

The Engineering Programme covers measurements requirements of core processes in an exceptionally wide range of industries, ensuring products new or old meet specifications, comply with regulations and improve manufacturing efficiency. The Engineering Programme will

  • provide a range of mass and length related standards, e.g. pressure, force, torque, density, angle, shape, form and surface texture;
  • ensure that UK standards are harmonised with those of trading partners; and
  • allow development of innovative new methods of measurement, particularly dynamic measurements.

The Flow Programme’s objectives are four-fold:

  • To provide and develop the UK’s national infrastructure for flow measurement;
  • To carry out generic research into industrial flow measurement problems;
  • To provide traceability to UK primary standards of the individual components of flowrate (volume, mass and time) and of all ancillary measurements (density, temperature, pressure etc) and to ensure international compatibility and credibility of the UK Standard by intercomparison with other National Standards worldwide;
  • To disseminate the results of the work quickly and efficiently for the benefit of UK industry

The Flow Programme underpins a large number of industrial sectors, including offshore oil and gas, water/sewage, petrochemical processing and food and drink. The majority of the Flow Programme is carried out by NEL, where facilities are maintained for water, gas, oil and multiphase flow as well as density measurement.

The UK flow measurement industry is amongst the world’s leaders in meter development and manufacture, innovative application and research. In addition to providing the basis for this industry the Flow programme provides the standards necessary for accurate collection of revenues from the North Sea oil and gas fields.
