Science Workforce

Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET)

In January 2002, the then Secretary of State (Patricia Hewitt) appointed Baroness Susan Greenfield to advise on a stronger and more strategic approach to addressing the issue of female under-representation in SET.

Science in Schools

As in all developed countries, the UK recognises the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (the "STEM" topics) as essential tools for wealth-creation, and balancing high standards of living with sustainability and environmental issues.

Research Careers

The Roberts' Review stemmed from the Government's concern that the supply of high quality scientists and engineers should not constrain the UK's future research and development and innovation performance.

Black and Ethnic Minority Schools Programme

A key priority for Science & Society is to encourage more participation from under-represented groups in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). The Government recognises that certain ethnic groups are under-represented in the scientific workforce and is committed to tackling this at all levels.
