The national academies - The Royal Society, The Royal Academy of Engineering and the British Academy - all receive grant-in-aid from the Science budget. These bodies play a vital role in underpinning the UK research base and contributing to the world-class status of UK research and of those who undertake it. Their activities are therefore vital if the Department for Innovation, Universities & Skills is to achieve the public service agreement target of improving the relative international performance of the UK research base.
The academies have also been incorporated into the performance management system, which was introduced as part of the Spending Review 2004 allocations. The allocations were made with a focus on outputs and as such, these outputs will need to be monitored and measured, which is the function of the performance management system.
