Barnsley Disability Employment Consortium (BDEC) is a Strategic Development Partnership (SDP) of voluntary and community sector organisations working to assist disabled people from welfare into work. Their approach to equality recognises that there are attitude and access issues that prevent the employment of disabled people.
Their project involves training staff to ensure that they embed awareness of the legislation on sexual orientation and religion or belief within their organisation and those of consortium members so that their clients benefit. In the longer term they also want to add to the Consortium’s awareness of developments on the Commission for Equality and Human Rights, helping to build their own local knowledge of equality issues.

The Board of Deputies of British Jews, the representative body of the Jewish community in Great Britain, has produced an employment booklet for Employers and Jewish Employees. The aim of the booklet is to raise awareness of current legal requirements, and in particular the Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003, in terms of employment practices for Jewish employees. This guidance aims to help both employers and employees to understand the particular requirements of practising Jews in the workplace. The Board’s booklet has thus been extremely useful and in great demand. The grant from the DTI enables the Board to pursue this project contributing to the production and dissemination of 10,000 more booklets.
