Dissemination of results

The 400-page sourcebook of detailed findings from WERS 2004 is published by Routledge on 5th July 2006. An accompanying 120-page report provides a descriptive portrait of employment relations in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The sourcebook of detailed findings “Inside the Workplace: Findings from the 2004 Workplace Employment Relations Survey” (ISBN 0-415-37813-3) by Barbara Kersley, Carmen Alpin, John Forth, Alex Bryson, Helen Bewley, Gill Dix and Sarah Oxenbridge was published by Routledge. The findings reported in the book relate to workplaces with 10 or more employees.

The report “Small and Medium-sized Enterprises: Findings from the 2004 Workplace Employment Relations Survey” (ISBN 0-85605-361-9) by John Forth, Helen Bewley and Alex Bryson is published by DTI. The publication is available to download from this website. The report is based on a subset of interviews with managers in around 600 private sector workplaces that belonged to SMEs. It also draws on a survey of around 5,000 employees working in these establishments. Linking these responses, the report provides an integrated picture of employment relations (see Related Documents).

Inside the Workplace: first findings from the 2004 Workplace Employment Relations Survey reports the first findings from the 2004 Workplace Employment Relations Survey (WERS 2004), and provides information on what has changed inside British workplaces since 1998. Hard copies of this 40 - page booklet are available via the DTI’s publication orderline on 0845 015 0010 (+44 845 015 0010) or email them at: publications@dti.gsi.gov.uk providing URN 05/1057. The booklet was launched on 5 July 2005 at the Royal Society of Arts in London. The presentation made at the RSA is available as a powerpoint (see link on right). Tables and figures from the first findings booklet are also available as a powerpoint presentation for teaching purposes (see Related Documents).

An in-depth exploration of the survey findings (‘the sourcebook’) will be published by Routledge in July 2006.

Data dissemination

The data from WERS 2004 is now available to users through the UK Data Archive (study number: 5294). In order to maintain the anonymity of respondents, region identifiers and a detailed industry classification are being withheld from general release until April 2007 and, prior to that date, data from the Financial Performance Questionnaire will be available only via the Micro-Data Laboratory operated by the Business Data Linking section at the Office for National Statistics. The ESRC has funded the establishment of an information and advice service for users of data from WERS 2004. The service is hosted at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research.
