Flexible Working - The right to request and the duty to consider
The right to request flexible working, which is currently available only for parents of children under 6, or under 18 if the child is disabled, will be extended to carers of adults with effect from 6 April 2007. We have now revised the guidance on how the law works to explain how it will apply to such carers.
The law as it applies to parents has not changed and this revised guidance applies equally to them. However, from April 2007 we are removing the requirement that a request must be made 14 days before their child's sixth, or if disabled their eighteenth birthday. In other words parents will be able to make a request to work flexibly up until their child's sixth or if disabled eighteenth birthday.
