Marine Renewables Deployment Fund (MRDF)

In August 2004 the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry announced the setting up of the Marine Renewables Deployment Fund (MRDF) with a budget of £50M. 

The MRDF has four components, the Wave and Tidal-stream Energy Demonstration Scheme, environmental research, related research and infrastructure support.

Wave and Tidal-stream Energy Demonstration Scheme

This provides capital grants and revenue support to multi-device early stage commercial generation facilities using technologies that have completed their R&D and are ready to move into a commercial environment.  It accounts for £42M of the MRDF’s budget and forms the core of the MRDF.  On 15 March 2007 the then Energy Minister Lord Truscott announced that the Scheme would be moving to an “open call” process in which applications could be received at any time.

Environmental Research

Generic research on the environmental impacts of wave and tidal stream.  BERR’s Research Advisory Group (RAG) is taking this forward.  £2M of BERR funding from the MRDF has been allocated to this activity.

Related Research

This is to allow BERR to commission a small number of relevant research projects to help the MRDF achieve its objectives.  In May 2007 BERR published two monitoring protocols to enable devices deployed under the Wave and Tidal-stream Energy Demonstration Scheme to report their performance in a consistent, transparent, unambiguous and meaningful way.  These were produced by Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt Universities and funded under the related research part of the MRDF.  BERR will commission specific items of work as and when it identifies particular needs in the management of the MRDF and is not inviting unsolicited proposals.
