Joint Working Group on Energy and the Environment

On 24 February 2003 the Government launched its Energy White Paper: Our energy future – creating a low carbon economy.

One of the recommendations of the White Paper was the establishment of a joint working group with Ofgem and others on environmental issues.

Following preparations which took place during the summer and autumn of 2003, the group first met in full on Friday 5 December 2003, and will meet once a quarter. The group focuses its work on environmental issues relating to gas and electricity, in order to help the Government and the regulators ensure that their combined and coordinated efforts achieve the aims and objectives of the Energy White Paper 2003: Our Energy Future - Creating a Low Carbon Economy in the most effective manner.

A Sub-Group on indicators has met four times to discuss the development of indicators on the environmental impacts of the electricity and gas industries. Indicators are already available for the domestic sector and plans are outlined for indicators for the industrial, transport and service sectors.
