The UK is playing a leading role in support for EBRD programmes to assist in the construction of a new safe confinement surrounding the damaged Unit 4 at Chernobyl, and associated measures for spent fuel and waste management.

The project is managed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), drawing together contributions from the G8 and other international donors. To date UK has contributed a total of £35m including £10m paid in March 2004.

The UK has hosted a third pledging event in London in May 2005 which raised an additional $220 million.

The construction of the new safe confinement is currently scheduled for completion in 2011.
