Non Proliferation - Global Threat Reduction Programme - Nuclear Security

The Nuclear Security programme is aimed at ensuring that security of nuclear and radiological materials at key sites is upgraded inline with internationally accepted standards.

This programme has been operating for four years and now has a portfolio of projects under development at seven sights across the Russian Federation, and is working closely with the IAEA on implantation of a range of UK funded projects, currently focused on Central Asia, under the auspices of the IAEA Nuclear Security Fund

The UK is also supporting workshops on nuclear site physical protection implemented in collaboration with the UK Civil Nuclear Constabulary. The courses are designed for Guard Force Commanders. The courses are run at British Nuclear Group’s (BNG) facilities at Summergrove, West Cumbria.

The UK is also playing an active role in the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism (GICNT), a joint initiative announced in July 2006 by President Bush and Russia's President Putin.
