Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can be a good way of looking at wind speed estimates for large areas. The database can also be downloaded as a compressed file, which once unzipped expands into ASCII files, which, with care, can be imported into a GIS. The zipped file is just under 1MB. It expands 6 ASCII files (one for each height above ground level for each country - Great Britain and Northern Ireland) and a text file, occupying nearly 15MB. The text file describes the format of the ASCII files.
To download the wind speed database to your own PC for use in a GIS, please enter the following information. Entries marked with an asterisk* need to be completed, the rest are optional.
