To view the Renewable Energy Strategy consultation and to have your say, go to the UK Renewable Energy Strategy website. Please note that the consultation closes on 26 September 2008
Renewable energy has a critical role to play in meeting our two key energy policy challenges:
That is why the UK helped secure agreement to a binding target that 20% of the EU’s energy should come from renewable sources by 2020. We are fully committed to meeting our fair share of this and the European Commission has proposed that 15% of all our energy (electricity, heat and transport) should come from renewables by 2020.
We already have a wide range of policies in place to deliver increased renewable deployment in the UK, but the scale of action required to generate 15% of the UK’s energy from renewables is ambitious – it will require a ten-fold increase in the level of renewable generation and use in the UK over the next 12 years. This is a step change and we must realise this change across the UK economy sustainably, minimising costs and maximising the benefits. Everyone has a role to play which is why we want to hear your views on the best and most cost-effective way of achieving a greater use of renewable energy.
