In June 2005, the Department of Trade & Industry (DTI, now BERR) launched a Strategy for Developing Carbon Abatement Technologies for Fossil Fuel Use:
The strategy was published with full industry involvement. It was developed for the cleaner use of coal and to enable it to have a role in a sustainable world so it can be used much more cleanly than it is today with significantly lower carbon dioxide emissions. This includes other harmful gases emitted to atmosphere from its use.
Government undertook a wide consultation, including issuing a consultation paper and holding a consultation workshop, and a full analysis was carried out on all the responses. The Strategy underpins a new programme of work to move the UK towards making fossil fuels more environmentally friendly.
UK industry is fully involved with the development of policy and the CAT Strategy through the Advisory Committee on Carbon Abatement Technologies (ACCAT). ACCAT provides advice and guidance to the Department on the Carbon Abatement Technologies Strategy and the Carbon Abatement Technologies Programme.
