Bioscience & Health Technology Database
The Bioscience & Health Technology Database was created to provide better industry data on companies active in the UK in the Medical Technology and Diagnostics, Medical Biotechnology and Industrial Biotechnology sectors. The need for better industry data was raised by the Ministerial Medical Technology Strategy Group (MMTSG), the Bioscience 2015 Review and the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation and Growth Team.
The project is jointly funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, the Department of Health and UKTI. Following an OJEU tender process, a consortium, led by Cels Business Services Limited (CBSL), was appointed to build and populate the database.
The database was populated using information supplied by the Trade Associations, Devolved Administrations, Medilinks and support networks that support these sectors who became Data Partners for the project. An Industry Advisory Group comprising representatives from the key Data Partners was established to provide input to the project. Information from the Data Partners was supplemented with information purchased under licence from existing commercial databases.
Access to the database is restricted to nominated users from BIS, DH and UKTI.
Analysis and commentary documents from the database entitled 'Strength and Opportunity: the landscape of the medical technology, medical biotechnology and industrial biotechnology enterprises in the UK' were published in December 2009 and December 2010. The 2011 commentary shows an updated picture of the continued strength of these sectors, and features the pharmaceutical industry for the first time.
