Boat Building

The boat building industry employs 10,000 people, with a turnover of £770 million (excluding VAT), GVA £311 million (= £32,300 GVA per head). (2004 statistics, Annual Business Inquiry (ABI) 2005).

The industry covers both sail and motor vessels. These range from small day boats to superyachts (private ocean-going leisure craft over 24 metres in length).

The superyacht sector is becoming increasingly important to the marine industries in the UK, as it is an expanding, high value added market.

BERR commissioned KPMG to conduct a Sector Competitiveness Analysis of the UK Leisure Boatbuilding Industry between February 2005 and January 2006. Its objectives were:

  • to find out how the UK industry is poised in face of growing competition from other economies and changing patterns of demand and developments in technology;
  • to explore key factors underpinning productivity and competitiveness in the UK sector;
  • to find out what the UK industry can learn from its major competitors, if any.

The Report and a Summary of Key Findings are available on this site as downloads (see right for links).

BERR's Business Relations team is currently agreeing an action plan with the British Marine Federation (BMF) to implement the conclusions of the Sector Competitiveness Analysis for the leisure boat-building sector.
