Climate Change Projects Office-UK Trade & Investment Trade Mission: Japan

Japanese flag

From 4th-8th February 2008 the Climate Change Projects Office (CCPO) led a trade mission to Tokyo and Osaka in Japan. The mission was jointly funded by UK Trade and Investment and was the first CCPO mission to an Annex I country. The aim was to form business partnerships between UK and Japanese companies in the climate change sphere, e.g. between those in Japan who wished to buy carbon credits using the UN’s Kyoto Mechanisms and UK companies who could offer credits for sale.

Twelve UK companies started the week by giving presentations on business opportunities relating to climate change and emissions trading in Tokyo (Barclays Capital, The Carbon Neutral Company, CEAG, Citi, Co2Balance, EEA Fund Management, ERM, JP Morgan, LRQA, Mott MacDonald, Norton Rose, Traditional Financial Services). Nine of the companies took part in the seminar in Osaka later in the week and around 250 Japanese representatives attended the seminars.

The Tokyo seminar at the British Ambassador’s residence was opened by Ambassador Graham Fry and was followed by speeches from the Climate Change Projects Office, and Jill Duggan (Defra’s Head of International Emissions Trading). Professor Yoshihiro Fujii from the Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies at Sophia University moderated the afternoon. At the New Otani Hotel in Osaka, Associate Professor Toru Morotomi from Kyoto University’s School of Government & Graduate School of Economics chaired the seminar and acted as moderator. The session was opened by David Abbott, Acting Consul General at the British Consulate-General Osaka and as in Tokyo the Climate Change Projects Office and Jill Duggan both gave presentations.

Following both events, there were drinks receptions providing networking opportunities and audience members met with the UK companies for 1-1 business meetings. The UK companies also visited Japanese companies and organisations, e.g. JBIC (Japan Bank for International Cooperation) and NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organisation) and Osaka Gas.
