The range of different engineering subsectors is vast, so Manufacturing, Materials and Environment (MME) have developed a good working relationship with the Engineering Employers Federation, the trade body that represents manufacturing and engineering companies in the UK. We also have a good relationship with the Engineering and Machinery Alliance (EAMA), which is an umbrella organisation of like-minded associations that represent SME manufactures in a number of mechanical engineering sub-sectors. Key areas of activity include, reducing the regulatory burden on engineering companies many of which are SME's, increasing capital investment incentives and improving the image of manufacturing.
We also work together with some key companies in the engineering sector. Our aim is to develop an in-depth understanding of the issues that impact on the engineering sector's productivity and competitiveness and ensure that the sector's concerns are taken into account during policy development. We also work closely with UKTI and the new Advanced Engineering Sector Advisory Group that seeks to coordinate and steer export activity in engineering, automotive and aerospace.
The challenge to reduce carbon dioxide emissions presents opportunities for UK companies operating in the power generation market - whether suppliers of turbines or the supporting infrastructure such as switchgear, transformers and distributors. These opportunities also include the application of new technologies such as carbon abatement for fossil fuels or tidal power generation.
In order to better understand the competitiveness issues faced by companies in this sub sector and to influence and inform the discussions surrounding future power generation, the MME Unit sits on the Advanced Power Generation Technology Forum (APGTF) and UKTI's Power Sector Advisory Group (PSAG), which seek to support UK companies and exploit overseas opportunities.
