Informing the Public in a Multimedia Age

The Better Regulation Executive (BRE) has reviewed the way information is delivered to the public, to ensure the Government is making best use of the various channels available in today’s multimedia age.

The way people access information is constantly changing. A few years ago there were four or five TV channels. Now 18 million households have multi-channel digital TV, most have internet access and almost everyone owns a mobile phone.

The Government must keep up with this changing environment by finding the best ways to communicate different types of information – from public safety to local planning applications. All this information is important to the public, so they have a right to be told things in a way they find convenient.

Finding the right channel

The BRE report, ‘Informing the public in a multimedia age’, examines how the public receives statutory notices, and considers ways in which this communication can be improved – at a local and national level.

The report addresses the key question of how government can get information to people in a way they find easy and convenient.
