Trading Standards

Local Authority Trading Standards services protect consumers and honest traders by ensuring that trade is carried out lawfully, fairly and safely.

Trading Standards Departments are a function of local government and are funded by local tax money. Each Local Authority is responsible for its service and decides its priorities and resources.

The Government wants a modern Trading Standards Service that can respond to the changing marketplace and meet the needs of both consumers and business. To support this we have provided funding to support initiatives such as regional coordination and scambuster pilots, that test new ways of working and promote more effective enforcement.

The National Performance Framework developed in partnership with Trading Standards and LACORS contributes to a more modern and effective service.
