UK Government Official and Experts inspect Nuclear Plant in Lithuania accompanied by Local Officials

Under the ’Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction’, G8 leaders pledged to provide up to $20 billion over ten years to support projects, initially in Russia, to address non-proliferation, disarmament, counter-terrorism and nuclear safety and agreed that the initial priorities would be focused on, but not exclusively:

  • Destruction of chemical weapons
  • Dismantlement of decommissioned submarines
  • Disposal of fissile materials
  • Alternative employment for former weapons scientists

In pursuit of these priority areas the UK developed the following programmes under the UK Global partnership Programme

  • Chemical Weapons Destruction
  • Nuclear Security
  • NW Russia
  • Chernobyl Shelter Fund
  • Closed Nuclear Cities Partnership
  • Social and Economic Consequences of Nuclear Power Plant Closure (in Ukraine, Lithuania and Bulgaria
  • Aktau BN350 Decommissioning, Kazakhstan
  • Decommissioning support work at Ignalina (Lithuania), Kozloduy (Bulgaria) and Bohunice (Slovakia)
  • Nuclear Safety
  • Elimination of Weapons Grade Plutonium (Zheleznogorsk reactor closure project and plutonium disposition)
