The Zangger Committee is an informal group of nuclear supplier countries that are party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The Zangger Committee (also known as the NPT Exporters Committee) was named after its first chairman Professor Claude Zangger. The Zangger Committee was formed to interpret Article III paragraph 2 of the NPT and to harmonize nuclear export control policies of NPT Parties.
The Zangger Committee focuses on what is meant in Article III.2 of the Treaty by "especially designed or prepared equipment or material for the processing, use or production of special fissionable material." The Zangger Committee maintains a Trigger List (triggering safeguards as a condition of supply) of nuclear-related strategic goods to assist NPT Parties in identifying equipment and materials subject to export controls.
The UK was a founder member of the Zangger Committee, and through the UK mission in Vienna acts as Secretariat to the Committee. The European Commission is permanent observer.
