We're creating a single website for everything to do with BIS but, while we do that, you'll find information in three places. > Find what you're looking for
BIS is responsible for transposing most legislation originating in the EU (see EU Commission website on transposition and the Single Market Scoreboard for further information on Member State responsibilities under related links on the right of this page) in areas such as technical standards, research, consumer protection, company law and corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, enterprise and industry policy, intellectual property, some aspects of employment law, many measures relating to sustainable development, market liberalisation, trade policy, governance of the structural funds and a number of measures affecting telecommunications and Digital Media.
BIS Ministers and officials therefore work closely with officials in other Member States, members of the EU Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers ( from 27 EU Member States) to develop policy in these key areas.
BIS Ministers and officials attend many of the European Union Councils that take decisions on policies directly affecting businesses, consumers and employees. The main Councils, where BIS has an interest, are the following:
• Competitiveness (COMP)
• Employment & Social Policy (EPSCO):
• Transport, Telecoms & Energy (TTE):
• General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC)
Further information on the responsibilities of these Councils, including Minutes of all Council meetings from the EU Council's on-line Newsroom, can be found under the related links to right of this page.
BIS under its former name of DTI published "A Guide to Working with the European Union" This booklet aims to give practical tips to business on how they can have their say in the EU lawmaking process, it explains the roles of EU Institutions, such as the Commission, EU Council and European Parliament, and gives pointers to other sources of information on accessing funding and doing business with the EU. See related document link on right of this page to view electronic version of the guide.
