Introduction - Trading with particular countries and regions
The Trade Policy Unit at BERR maintains bilateral relations with the world through two processes. As a member of the European Union, the UK is party to the EU Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs), which are negotiated by the European Commission with another country or trading bloc with the aim to enter into a preferential trading arrangement with each other.
Separately the UK engages with third countries, which are not part of the EU, and non-EU regional groupings with the aim of developing open and competitive markets for UK companies.
The Trade Policy Unit lead on both the engagement with third countries and also represent the UK to the EU in RTAs.
