Following the 2007 review of export controls, which included an extensive public consultation exercise, the Government made a commitment in its initial response to the views and recommendations it received, to extend the current export and trade controls to cover Hand-held Spiked Batons, otherwise known as “Sting Sticks.”
The amendment to the current controls was announced in a Written Statement by Malcolm Wicks MP, Minister of State for Energy, dated 6 February 2008 in which the Minister stated that "sting sticks" would be added to the current UK list of torture equipment, to which the most stringent controls are applied.
This commitment came into affect today (6 April 2008) through the Export Control (Security and Para-military Goods) Order 2008 (S.I.2008 No. 639) (“the amending Order”), and will control the export of “sting sticks” from the UK and the trading of sting sticks between one third country and another third country, where any part of that trading takes place within the UK, or where it takes place anywhere in the world if carried out by a UK person.
Further details can be found by accessing information in Notice 200807 which provides full details of the amendments.
You can also access more details of the Review for background on the introduction of these new controls.
