Advantage West Midlands, BERR sponsored RDA, invests £100 million in iconic station refurbishment.

Part of a broader transport project to increase the station's handling capacity, this will promote renewal and regeneration of the area and provide around 5000 jobs.

On 12 February, the Government announced the £400 million redevelopment of Birmingham New Street Station. This is the biggest station redevelopment outside London. Advantage West Midlands (AWM) one of the nine Regional Development Agencies (RDA) which BERR sponsors, will provide £100 million for the project - the largest single RDA investment since the Agencies were set up.

The development will see the construction of a new 10,500 square metre concourse, twice the size of the current one, and a giant light-filled atrium, roofed with the same material used on the Eden Project. The station will also have a new glass façade.

The project will redevelop and regenerate the area around the station and will include better pedestrian connections right across the city centre. This iconic redevelopment is of major importance to the economy of the West Midlands and has wide support in the region. It will catalyse the renewal of the surrounding area and is expected to create 5000 new jobs.
